Big Day

so yesterday we decided we needed some adventure.  We drove to check out Elkhorn Ghost town... which isn't so much a ghost town as there are people living there.  There's a lot of really old mining stuff, abandoned buildings, old cars, etc, and a couple of restored/preserved buildings that you can wander around in.  The best part of the day in my opinion was being reminded of how beautiful an area in which we live.  It was a good bird day, including Sandhill Cranes in either courtship or territorial defense, Great Blue Heron on the nest, Bald Eagle on the nest, mountain bluebirds, western meadowlarks.  I'm excited for the days that the kids start picking up on what all the birdies are out there.  We found a little stream with a trail along it and walked a bit, which Clare loved.  Rosie, overall had a fussy day.  She slept in the carseat, but anywhere else she just wasn't into it.  Poor things was fussy all the way until we got her down for bed.  So, after Elkhorn, we drove around the countryside and found out way to Whitehall, not much of a destination, with hopes of finding some food.... all we found open was the A&W/KFC at the freeway exit.  Good livin'.  Clare decided to fall asleep only about 10 minutes before we got home, but she was a champ and had a good evening at home despite the almost no nap.  She really is a champ.  It's for sure Rosie's biggest day out and Clare's biggest in a while.  Beautiful day outside... pretty exhausting for all, but worthwhile.  Clare got to meet her first three-legged dog in Elkhorn... she seemed really into him, but not so much vice versa.  I liked Elkhorn.... pretty spot right at the base of the snowy Elkhorn Mountains.  Nice to get back in the mountains and remember how much I love it and how much I want the kids to love it.  Great to get remotivated.  Dave Out.
